The European Parliament on Tuesday adopted amendments to the European Union’s (EU) asylum procedure regulation, which will enable faster processing of asylum applications and thus the deportation of migrants whose applications are denied.

According to a respective statement from the European Parliament, the EU’s legislature approved—by 408 votes in favor, 184 against and 60 abstentions—the creation of a list of safe countries of origin.

Also, the members of the European Parliament (MEPs) approved—by 396 votes in favor, 226 against and 30 abstentions—an agreement on the application of the safe third country concept.

The new EU-wide list of safe countries of origin will speed up the processing of asylum applications for nationals of these countries: Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco, and Tunisia.

The European Commission will monitor the situation in the listed and candidate countries and will respond if circumstances change. It can temporarily decide that a country is unsafe, or propose to permanently remove it from the aforesaid list.

Also, the EU member states will have the option to designate additional safe countries of origin at national level.
