The Armenian government, at its Cabinet meeting Thursday, made a decision to move the Armenian embassy in Switzerland from Geneva to Bern.

The respective explanation states that since 2002, the Armenian embassy and the permanent representation of Armenia to the UN Office and several other international organizations have been operating in Geneva. The permanent representative of Armenia to the UN Office and several other international organizations in Geneva is concurrently accredited as the Ambassador of Armenia to Switzerland.

Taking into account the distance between the Swiss capital Bern and Geneva and the specificity of multilateral and bilateral agendas, it has become necessary to move the Armenian embassy in Geneva to Bern.

About 100 embassies in Switzerland—including those of Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran, and Georgia—are also located in Bern.

The relocation of the Armenian embassy to Bern will further facilitate regular communication with representatives of the diplomatic corps, provide an opportunity to more effectively ensure contact with them, and promote the development of bilateral cooperation and the intensification of political dialogue.

The annual costs of moving the Armenian embassy in Switzerland from Geneva to Bern have been estimated at Armenian drams equivalent to only 344,800 Swiss francs. Also, additional Armenian drams equivalent to 62,800 Swiss francs will be required for the purchase of furniture, equipment, a deposit, and a commission fee.

With the adoption of this decision, Armenia's state budget expenditures will increase by Armenian drams equivalent to 407,500 Swiss francs in 2026, and by Armenian drams equivalent to 304,800 Swiss francs in the following years.
