The system that was created after World War II has effectively stopped working — this can now be stated without excessive emotion. This was said today, March 2, by head of Rossotrudnichestvo Yevgeny Primakov at a roundtable discussion titled "Events in Iran and the Destruction of International Law."

According to him, the UN has lost its effectiveness and no longer fulfills the function for which it was created — preventing conflicts between states through peaceful means. "Many examples can be cited: Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and so on. Neither Security Council resolutions nor statements by state representatives have any significant influence on either the start or the end of wars," Primakov stated.

He emphasized that this does not mean one should abandon participation in the UN. "This is merely an acknowledgment of reality. Creating an alternative global system today is impossible. No one will conclude new universal treaties that will actually be observed. Therefore we continue to work on this platform, to achieve the decisions and resolutions we need, but without the illusion that this is capable of stopping wars," he said.
