Tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets Saturday in several cities across the country to protest plans by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to reform the judiciary, The Associated Press reported.

Critics say the measures introduced by the new uncompromising government would weaken the Supreme Court, limit judicial oversight and give more power to politicians. Protesters believe the implementation of these plans would undermine the country's democracy.

Controversy over the powers of the courts deepens as the government intends to introduce some legislation in parliament on Monday amid calls for partial strikes by businesses and professional groups.

For the sixth week, protesters continue to hold large rallies, the main one held in downtown Tel Aviv, as well as several smaller gatherings in other cities.
