YEREVAN. – Head of Armenian ruling party’s faction Galust Sahakyan said the increasing public transport fares can just “save the situation” but not lead to improvement of service quality in the transport sector.

“Transport is one of the major sectors of the economy, it is not the scope of the owners of so-called “mini bus routes’,” he said during the Thursday press conference.

Sahakyan noted that the government should implement social programs and make amendments to the transport law.

“In this regard, the Armenian government should initiate legislation in the area to ​​settle problems in the transport sector the aim of which is easing the situation of vulnerable groups,” vice-chairman of the Republican Party noted.

Public transport fares in Armenia’s capital rose by 1.5-2 times starting from July 20. The bus fare made AMD 100 instead of 50, while minibus fare increased from AMD 100 to 150.
