BAKU. – At Saturday’s meeting, the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan considered the matter on the confirmation of the candidacy of Ilham Aliyev nominated by the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.

Aliyev’s candidacy was officially confirmed through voting at the meeting, reports APA news agency of Azerbaijan.

Six candidates have submitted necessary documents to the CEC to run in the upcoming presidential elections. They are: “Chairman of New Azerbaijan Party, President Ilham Aliyev, Chairman of Freedom party Ahmad Oruj, Citizens and Development Party chairman Ali Aliyev, Liberal Democratic Party of Azerbaijan chairman Fuad Aliyev, Umid party chairman Iqbal Aghazade and lawyer Ilgar Mammadov (Altay).”

The Central Election Commission passed a decision to hold presidential elections on October 9.

 Presidential elections are held in Azerbaijan every five years.

To note, this is Aliyev’s third nomination as president, and he heads the country since 2003.

Pursuant to the changes made in the Constitution of Azerbaijan, the same person may be reelected president of the country unlimited times.
