YEREVAN. – If there is principal stance of Kazakhstan, and there are obstacles on Armenia’s accession to Customs Union regarding Karabakh issue, nothing will prevent Yerevan from turning back to Europe, the expert said.

In this case, political analyst Sergey Minasyan believes, Brussels would resume talks on Association Agreement.

Minasyan, deputy director of Caucasus Institute, said Nursultan Nazarbayev’s statement most likely was a formal one.  

“The statement was addressed to Russia, as it is clear that Kazakhstan and Belarus have certain problems with Russia on making future decisions in Customs Union. It is also clear that Kazakhstan has certain commitments with respect to Azerbaijan,” the expert added.

He stressed that Armenia’s accession to Customs Union is a result of the influence of Russian factor.

“Taking into account big problems with economic expedience, Armenia nevertheless joins Customs Union first of all for the sake of Nagorno-Karabakh, and official Yerevan will never cross the red line,” Minasyan added.

Earlier Nursultan Nazarbayev said Kazakhstan is ready to sign roadmap on Armenia’s accession to Customs Union but with a particular opinion, as this demands explanations on the Customs Union borders in connection with the problem of Nagorno-Karabakh.
