YEREVAN. – The Azerbaijani authorities’ conduct toward Armenian captive Arsen Baghdasaryan was expected and predictable.

Military analyst Arkadi Grigoryan expressed such a view commenting, at Armenian News-NEWS.am’s request, on the concocted criminal case which the Azerbaijani authorities have brought against Baghdasaryan.

To note, according to the Azerbaijani media, the trial is held behind closed doors.

“What else could have been expected from a dictatorial regime, especially against the backdrop of the Armenian sides’ triumphs, both in border incidents and in the case of diplomatic success and the Pope’s statement [on recognizing the Armenian Genocide]?

“The Azerbaijanis are attempting to ‘equalize the score’ to the extent possible. It can hardly be considered a noble step when the captive is forced to ‘confess’ that he is a saboteur.

“Conducting the trial behind closed doors once again shows that the Azerbaijani authorities are afraid of even their own society; a journalist may suddenly write something unwarranted. It has long been known: the more insidious, the more fearful,” Grigoryan noted.

To note, the case brought against Nagorno-Karabakh Republic citizen Arsen Baghdasaryan is also a vivid illustration of Azerbaijan’s violation of international human rights. The Azerbaijani authorities had not permitted the International Committee of the Red Cross representatives to see him for 1.5 months since his capture. Baghdasaryan was taken into Azerbaijan captivity on December 26 of the year past.
