The European Commission realizes the whole importance of the 100th anniversary of Armenian Genocide, the MEP Kristalina Georgieva stated during the debates on the question of the Armenian Genocide held in the European Parliament on Wednesday.  

“What happened 100 years ago can still be felt in this century, touching upon the relations between Armenia and Turkey”, Kristalina Georgieva stated.

According to her, the EU Commission continues to support the normalization of relations between Yerevan and Ankara without preconditions. She said that the EU Commission has allocated 2 million dollars for programs on improving the communication between the people.

“In April we’ll join the Armenians in honoring the memory of the Armenian Genocide victims. Regardless of the words we use there can be no denial of historical reality. We will work with the Commission to draw right lessons from history,” the MEP stated.

The MEP Elmar Brok said that “we must not forget that many people were killed 100 years ago.” “We must act so that genocides are never repeated again; however we haven’t managed to do this in the 21st century. We witnessed the genocide in Rwanda and other places. Genocide has no justifications, whatever the political circumstances are,” Elmar Blok said.
