In a phone conversation with Turkey’s PM Ahmet Davutoglu Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel personally explained Germany’s position on the matter of qualifying the slaughter of Armenians as genocide.

According to the German government spokeswoman Christina Wirtz, Merkel and Davutoglu had a calm conversation, and Merkel presented Germany’s position. Responding to whether the Turkish PM objected to using the word ‘genocide,’ the spokeswoman answered she had no such information.

Earlier, the German newspaper Die Welt, referring to its sources, reported that Davutoglu protested Merkel with regard to her agreement to qualify the slaughter of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in the beginning of the 20th century as a genocide.  

On April 24 a resolution on Armenian Genocide will be put on vote in Bundestag.
