1.5 million Armenians must be remembered not only on April 24, humorist and journalist Mathieu Madénian (Armenian and German by descent), who also cooperates with Charlie Hebdo, said in an interview given to Paris Match.

Did you commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide?

M. M.: I was working, as always…April 24 is an important date, but people shouldn’t forget about the killed 1.5 million Armenians on other days.

Did your family survice the Genocide?

In the beginning of the massacres my 4-year-old grandfather escaped with his brothers and mother. Whereas his father, my grand grandfather was arrested by the Turkish authorities in a village. He hadn’t been seen any more.

Do you feel you’re Armenian?

I’m French of Armenian descent. I was brought up on my grandmother’s and grandfather’s stories about Armenia. That’s why that country managed to become a bit mine too. I haven’t been there yet, but I hope to visit it soon.

Do you normally speak about Armenia?

I often speak about Armenia and Armenians in interviews on TV and in my articles, as I have done in Charie Hebdo this week, or on stage. This is an opportunity for me to make some of my contribution.
