European Parliament Secretary-General Klaus Welle proposed to review the rules of financial support provided to EU political parties in EU member states in order to deprive from funding national Eurosceptic parties, Sputnik News reported.

As it is explained, at the moment the political party has the right to receive funds from the budget of European Parliament  if it has representatives in seven different national and regional parliaments of the EU countries or in the EP,  or if it  received at least 3% of the votes in the last elections to the European Parliament. This means that the pan-European party cannot have mandates in the EU body, but continue to receive funding through its elected representatives in national and regional parliaments and assemblies.

According to the news agency, Welle intends to make so that financing can be allocated to those parties which representatives received mandates in the European Parliament. In addition, he suggests to introduce a quota of 7-22 seats for any party.

Representative of the European People's Party Lopez De Pablo stated that changes of rules are necessary in order to avoid the fact that money of the European Parliament was used by the populist parties opposing Europe .

In case of approval this plan can be activated in 2018.  However, the agency notes that  change of rules will hardly influence the largest parties of eurosceptics, for example, the French "National front". It will hit smaller parties.
