The UK still has an opportunity to stay in the European Union, despite the results of the referendum on its membership, Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said.

Citing the example of France and Germany, Gentiloni stated that over the last 20 years they saw how results of referenda in Europe were cancelled by other referenda or even decisions of national parliaments.

According to him, if the Britons change their decision on Brexit then he is ready to drink a glass of champagne for it, BBC reported.

For the implementation of the outcome of the Brexit, the UK should  apply article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty which implies negotiations on the country's withdrawal from the European Union in two years.
