Former U.S. Defense Secretary Melvin Laird died at the age of 94, NY Times reported.
Laird was born in Nebraska in 1922. He graduated from Carleton College in 1944, having enlisted in the United States Navy a year earlier. Then he became the member of the House of Representatives of the U.S..
In 1969 the 37th U.S. President Richard Nixon appointed him as a Defense Secretary. On this post he, in particular, opposed mass participation of the U.S. soldiers in the Vietnam War.
