Professors of the universities of Michigan and California have done research on whether social networks are a source of social support. They analyzed data from studies conducted on this subject in the past 10 years, reports The Hindustan Times.

Their research shows that, the main reason for using Facebook is getting a social support. At the same time, people used Twitter to obtain new knowledge or advice. In fact, the researchers found out, why people use social networks during working hours. They surveyed US residents who have full time and part time jobs. 

According to the survey, nearly 34 percent of the surveyed used social networks to take a break from their work. 27% communicated with their friends or family members. 24 % accessed social networks to maintain professional relationships, whereas about 20% searched for a job. 17% of respondents used social networks to build or strengthen relationships with partners.
