Almost 50 thousand women in Germany have undergone female circumcision, tells the German Ministry of Family Affairs on the international day against female circumcision. It has been the first time, that the agency ordered to conduct such research. According to different estimates, from 1500 to 5700 women who live in Germany are at risk of being subjected to circumcision, reports DW.

The highest percent of women who underwent circumcision are originally from Eritrea, Iraq, Somalia, Egypt, and Ethiopia. The flow of migrants from these countries in Germany increased by 40 percent from the late 2014 until the middle of 2016. In this regard, the number of women living in Germany who suffered from circumcision in this period increased by 30 percent.

As the German legislation provides, the circumcision of women, even if done overseas, is an unlawful act. In December of 2016, the German government passed a law under which a person who will take his wife or daughter abroad for circumcision surgery purposes will be deprived of the German nationality. This is how the authorities fight against the cases, when the migrants living in Germany take their daughters or wives home to get them circumcised.
