In 1990 the Supreme Soviet of Armenian SSR adopted a decision, describing the events in Baku a  “genocide”. However, the legislative body of independent Armenia has not made a single step in this direction, Secretary of “Heritage” parliamentary faction Larisa Alaverdyan told NEWS.am, commenting on the legal aspect of events of 1990 in Baku.

“I consider this a lack of foresight. Meanwhile, all the facts prove that Azerbaijan has not broken with the Armenian Genocide policy, which is gaining new momentum. This policy becomes a cornerstone of relations between Azerbaijan and other countries, Alaverdyan noted. The MP also stressed 2 years ago she prepared a draft resolution, which later became a draft bill to recognize the Baku events of January 13 -19 as genocide against Armenians. However, the draft bill still remains on the agenda of Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of Armenian National Assembly, as Alaverdyan herself puts off its discussion. “I have put off this discussion because I am not confident in the support of coalition members. This year, I will continue the work I have begun. I hope this time National Assembly will make a statement. Every year we issue statements on Azerbaijanis’ acts of atrocities committed in 1988-1990, however they are addressed to nobody. The point is not the tragic historical fact, but a policy of genocide neither Azerbaijan nor Turkey abandon,” Alaverdyan stressed.

”In fact, I would like to reiterate that genocide is not a crime against a nation, but a crime against humanity,” Alaverdyan concluded.
