The Armenian Parliament has begun discussing the nominee for the post of Armenian Ombudsman. Karen Andreasyan is the only nominee by the ruling coalition.
Speaking in Parliament Andreasyan stated that protection of human rights means rendering free service to people. "The Ombudsman`s office must work efficiently. I am interested in more people applying to the office. We must not get tired or ignore people`s complaints. On the contrary, we must be happy about every letter. Not that human rights are violated in Armenia but that people trust the Ombudsman. If we show warm attitude to people, it will build up confidence in the institute of Ombudsman," Andreasyan said. He is determined to protect the rights of every Armenian citizen. Andreasyan promised he will not serve the interests of any political circles.
Armenian MPs asked the nominee numerous questions. The cross bencher Leva Khachatryan expressed his discontent with the fact that Andreasyan did not hold any meetings with cross benchers. "We are not acting mechanically. All this is opf importance for us," Khachatryan said.
Ernest Soghomonyan, a member of the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) asked about Andreasyan`s previous human rights activities. Andreasyan assured the MP he has been focusing attention on freedom of speech.
