Following the Government’s sitting on March 3, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan made a statement, accusing his opponents of provocations and dirty political tricks.

According to him, his opponents are incapable of analyzing and “have us say what we never say.” Premier Sargsyan cited the example of the media reports that have him say that Armenia does not need production, but it should become a country rendering services. The Premier said it was a provocation.

“It is a means of waging a political struggle and discrediting the authorities,” Sargsyan said. He called on the Government members to be the first to speak of omissions in the fields in their charge. “This style of work will put our opponents at a disadvantage because speaking of omission requires making a serious analysis first,” the Premier said.  

Armenian News-NEWS.am reminds readers that Premier Tigran Sargsyan gave an interview to Armenian TV channels on February 25. One of the questions sounded as follows: “When will Armenia turn from a consumer country into a producer country? Is it possible to organize home production of the good Armenia is importing now? Why is not such production organized in Armenia?

The answer is as follows:

“We have a short-term program and a long-term one. The long-term program is: what will the Armenian economy be during the next 15-25 years? Will Armenia be a producer country?

“For example, the United States is not a producer country. It is a country producing services and rendering its services to the entire world. The services are based on knowledge-based economy and, in this respect, the U.S. economy is the world’s most dynamically developing economy. This is economy of the future. I think that, in a long-term aspect, Armenia’s position must be a similar one, as we are unable to compete with China or India in production.

“With respect to production volume and wages it is more profitable to produce TV sets or computers in China or India than in Armenia. In future, our country must become country rendering knowledge-based services. In the next ten years we must have ten universities that will meet the best international standards. If we fail to accomplish this task, we will have no future as a nation.”
