A most important event featured the Armenian-Azerbaijani-Russian presidential meeting in Sochi, March 5 - for the first time the sides agreed to accept all the settlement principles, Aram Karapetyan, Chairman of the New Times Party, told journalists March 14.
"But how will the conflict be settled if the principles are incompatible? The principles of peoples`t right o self-determination and territorial integrity are incompatible. They cannot be peacefully applied. But if we view simultaneous application of both principles, Azerbaijan is facing a rather situation. It means that Nagorno-Karabakh remains part of Azerbaijan with the highest-level autonomy. There is no other way of simultaneous application of both principles," Karapetyan said.
Even if a referendum were held in Nagorno-Karabakh it would at best create the grounds for a confederation, he said.
"This is a problem we are going to face. However, President Serzh Sargsyan and the ruling regime think we will face the problem in 10 or 15 years," Karapetyan said.
Getting the territories back is not a priority task for Azerbaijan. "If the U.S. and Israel are to take actions against Iran, Azerbaijan will not want a quarrel with Iran. If Azerbaijan gets the territories back, it will have to allow its territory to be used for actions against Iran. On the other hand, by putting its territorial claims into the background, Azerbaijan will let Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia take control of the matter. This is a plot, and Serzh Sargsyan is aware of it as well. The Armenian authorities feel something`s wrong here," Karapetyan said.
