Deputy of the My Step faction of the National Assembly of Armenia Hayk Sargsyan has introduced a bill proposing to make a supplement to the Law of the Republic of Armenia “On military service and status of military serviceman”.
According to the bill, conscript citizens of the Republic of Armenia under the age of 27 will be provided with the opportunity to pay AMD 10.000.000 to the State Budget of the Republic of Armenia and serve in the army through an accelerated procedure for a month.
If the soldier wishes to continue to serve in the armed forces in the course of one month, he may retrieve the money and serve another 23 months.
Based on the rationale for the bill, those avoiding the two-year compulsory military service mainly have a lot of money and avoid military service in any way, and most of them emigrate from the country and take their family members and financial resources with them. “Taking this into consideration, I believe it is necessary to provide an opportunity for alternative service, which will help make those citizens not want to depart from the country,” he said.
