The UN Secretary-General called for the introduction of global rules governing the activities of such influential social networks as Twitter and Facebook.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted that there should not be a company that has the power to decide whether, for example, ex-President Donald Trump's Twitter account should be closed.
According to him, a mechanism should be created, in which there is a regulatory framework with rules that allow doing this in accordance with the law.
He noted that he is particularly concerned about the power of social media companies.
The UN Secretary-General pointed out the amount of information that is collected about each of us, the lack of control over the data, and the fact that this data can be used not only for commercial purposes, but also to change our behavior and risks that can be used with political points of view for control over citizens in different countries.
Guterres said this requires serious discussion and is one of the goals of his Digital collaboration roadmap, launched last June.
The roadmap aims to promote a safer and more equitable digital world.
It calls for action in eight areas, including achieving universal Internet connectivity by 2030, building trust and security in the digital environment, and building a more effective digital collaboration architecture.
