The recent events that took place in Nagorno-Karabakh led to the emergence of the need to make the punishment for espionage and treason in favor of another state more severe. This is what co-author of the bill on making amendments to the Criminal Code, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia (Prosperous Armenia Party) Vahe Enfiajyan said during today’s discussion on the bill.

The MP particularly suggested increasing the periods for punishment for such crimes since the existing regulatory legal acts fail to prevent treason or espionage. According to the MP, this is exactly why it is necessary to determine the severity of the severe punishment as a preventive measure within the scope of the Criminal Code. For this reason, it is proposed to set 12 years of imprisonment for espionage and betrayal of the homeland (for persons having carried out espionage) and 15-20 years of imprisonment, with the right to confiscation of property or without, for persons having betrayed the homeland. People in Armenia who betray the homeland may face an even more severe punishment, that is, life imprisonment.
