YEREVAN. – Hraparak daily of Armenia writes: After the meeting of [parliamentary opposition] PAP [Prosperous Armenia Party] leader Gagik Tsarukyan and [PM] Nikol Pashinyan, it was announced yesterday that snap [parliamentary] elections are expected in Armenia on June 20.
Under the current legislation, in particular, the Electoral Code, snap NA [National Assembly] elections are held not earlier than 30 and not later than 45 days after the dissolution of the parliament. And the parliament is dissolved after the resignation of the prime minister and the non-election of a new prime minister within two weeks. This means that if everything goes in its course, Nikol Pashinyan shall submit resign in the time between April 22 and 27.
However, although [parliamentary opposition] BAP [Bright Armenia Party] leader Edmon Marukyan announced yesterday that the martial law also will be lifted [in Armenia] in the coming days, surprises are not ruled out. If the parliament adopts the new Electoral Code—and in particular the provision that no NA elections are held during martial law, the regular or special NA elections not held due to martial law or state of emergency are held not earlier than 50 and not later than 65 days after the end of martial law or state of emergency—, the arrangement on election day will fall through, and in the best case, the timeframes will be changed, in the worst-case scenario, Nikol Pashinyan may remain acting prime minister indefinitely if the martial law is not lifted.
