Hungary's unicameral parliament has passed the bill on the country's withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

During the respective voting that was broadcast on the legislature's website, more than two-thirds of Hungarian MPs voted in favor of this bill.

Presenting the bill to parliament, Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto claimed that in recent years the ICC has been highly politicized and has begun to be used by various countries to achieve their objectives in international conflicts.

"Hungary believes that politics and geopolitics have no place in international organizations," the FM added.

The Hungarian government announced its plan to withdraw from the ICC in early April, coinciding this decision with a visit to Budapest by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who enjoys Hungarian support in the fight against the radical Palestinian Hamas movement.

In November last year, the International Criminal Court had issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Palestine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, however, had called this decision absurd and shameful.
