Nicaragua’s Foreign Minister Valdrack Jaentschke has informed Audrey Azoulay, Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), that the country is withdrawing from this organization because it awarded a prize to the opposition newspaper La Prensa, which this Central American country's government considers a periodical that supports violence and brutality, and also pursues a policy that encourages US interference in Nicaraguan affairs.

The Nicaraguan government announces its sovereign and irreversible decision to withdraw from this organization, Jaentschke said in a statement, the text of which was publicized by the local El 19 digital portal.

The foreign minister noted that Nicaragua considers UNESCO’s actions that announced the undeserved recognition of the newspaper La Prensa unacceptable, and the country condemns and rejects it in the most resolute way.

According to Jaentschke, La Prensa, allegedly being a media outlet that has historically supported violence, interference in internal affairs, hatred and cruelty in Nicaragua, is a true traitor to the country.
