The United Kingdom is preparing an aircraft carrier for possible deployment to the Middle East, cutting the notification period in half to five days, Sky News reports.
The accelerated readiness timeline for the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales means that the massive vessel will be able to respond more quickly if a decision on mobilization is made.
According to a media source, crews have also been warned of a possible deployment in connection with the US and Israeli war against Iran. This move does not mean that the warship — which carries F-35 fighter jets and is expected to be accompanied by multiple other vessels and a submarine — will necessarily be sent to reinforce the United Kingdom’s defenses in the Persian Gulf and around Cyprus, but it does mean the prime minister will have greater flexibility to move it more quickly if deemed necessary.
The HMS Prince of Wales is based in Portsmouth.
