YEREVAN. – Armenia has already expressed its position on the status of Jerusalem, and it has remained unchanged.

Tigran Balayan, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Armenia, on Friday stated the aforesaid, as he reflected on the UN General Assembly voting with respect to Jerusalem.

In his words, the status of Jerusalem is a key issue on the international agenda, and it can be resolved through negotiations in the context of an acceptable settlement for the parties to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“It can pave the way for a lasting security and the establishment of peace,” Balayan stated. “There exists a centuries-old Armenian presence, a rich Armenian historical and cultural heritage in Jerusalem. The Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the churches with rights to the Holy Sites. Naturally, we [Armenia] are carefully following all developments concerning Jerusalem.

“Considering the positions expressed in recent times regarding Jerusalem, we accept that they do not foretell the defining of the final status of Jerusalem through negotiations.”

As reported earlier, the UN General Assembly voted 128-9 with 35 abstentions on Thursday in favor of a nonbinding resolution declaring US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital “null and void.” Armenia also voted for the resolution.

On December 6, US President Donald Trump stated, that he recognizes Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel, and said the US Department of State has been ordered to start transferring the US embassy in Israel, from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

But this decision has brought about worldwide reaction.
