YEREVAN. – Presidential nominee from the Republican Party of Armenia said he would run in the elections.

Armen Sarkissian met with the incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan on Friday to inform him about his decision.

During their previous meeting in January, Sarkissian, who is Armenia’s ambassador to UK, said he would like to hold meetings with the political party representatives, Artsakh leadership and Diaspora representatives as well as representatives of the scientific, intellectual circles, NGOs, businessmen and the working class before making the final decision.

As a result of the constitutional amendments in 2015, Armenia has passed to a parliamentary system of governance. Accordingly, the President of the country will be elected by the National Assembly, rather than by nationwide elections, for the first time.

The new President of Armenia will be elected for seven years, and for only one term.
