A public rally against exploitation of the Amulsar gold mine has kicked off in Yerevan.

The public rally, which has gathered members of various political parties and environmental organizations and civil society representatives, is taking place at France Square and will be followed by a march.

The attendees greeted the schoolchildren of Jermuk and Gndevaz towns who hadn’t gone to school as a sign of protest today.

Representative of the Armenian Environmental Front Levon Galstyan informed the attendees about the fight against exploitation of the Amulsar gold mine and the current state of affairs.

The environmentalists fighting against exploitation of the Amulsar gold mine had given the government until September 20 and had declared this day as Environmental Mobilization Day. The government believes there are no grounds to prohibit Lydian Armenia from exploiting the mine, while environmentalists have several facts proving the risks of exploitation for the entire region and claim that the permit for exploitation of the mine was granted with violations.
