YEREVAN. – Iran can transport its energy resources via Armenia and Georgia to Russia, but the agreement with the Georgian government is needed, German analyst Alexander Rahr told Armenian News-NEWS.am.
Speaking about Armenia’s chances to become a transit route for transportation of the Iranian oil and gas to Europe, the analyst said it is difficult to imagine, since Armenia and Iran will have to reach an agreement with Georgia or Turkey.
“But, as we know, Turkey’s main partner is Azerbaijan, not Armenia,” he emphasized.
The analyst noted that Iran has a border with Turkey, but construction of a pipeline in this region becomes more and more dangerous, given the terrorist attacks of the Islamic State on the border between Syria and Turkey.
“Therefore, Iran in fact can have a route via Armenia and Georgia to Russia, but they need to arrange it with the Georgian government. The Georgian authorities are not anti-Russian Saakashvili, but until the conflict over Abkhazia and South Ossetia is unresolved, the Russian side will hardly be capable to reach an agreement with the Georgian leadership,” he added.
At the end of the day Iran is not in a geopolitical isolation, as it seems to be, and Tehran can easily choose other way and transport gas to China via Turkmenistan or agree with Pakistan on entering the Indian Ocean, the analyst resumed.
