YEREVAN. – Bahraini citizen Radhi Fadhel Abbas Ahmed Ali, who was arrested in the Republic of Armenia (RA) but later released, has left for Iran.

His attorney, Tigran Safaryan, told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“Ali had come out of the penitentiary; persons in civilian clothes had approached him and said they were not extraditing [him] and taking [him] to Zvartnots airport,” Safaryan noted. “When they had taken [him] to the airport, they had said they were sending [him] to Bahrain. [But] after long persuasion, they had proposed, in this case, to send [him] to Iran, and my client was forced to agree [to this].”

The attorney said he has information that the Bahraini citizen was accompanied by Armenian police officers.

As per Tigran Safaryan, such police conduct is unacceptable.

“I’ve sent letters to the RA Police and the National Security Service to find out who decided to send my client to Iran, and why,”  he added.

According to a police press release, Bahraini citizen Fadhel R. was found and detained on January 1, at Zvartnots International Airport in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan.

Fadhel R. is on Bahrain’s international wanted list ever since May 25, 2014 on charges of attempted murder, illicit trafficking of explosives, damaging public and private property, mass promiscuity, and terrorism.

He was arrested and taken to a Yerevan Police detention center.

On the next day, head of the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security of Bahrain announced that Fadhel R. had been sentenced to seven years in prison in Bahrain, and that measures are taken to have him returned to the country.

The Armenia-based human rights organizations, however, are very concerned about this because there are strict laws in Bahrain, and therefore Fadhel R. might be executed, if he is extradited to his country.

The Bahraini citizen was released on Tuesday.
