Dec. 7, according to Chairman of Azerbaijani Committee against Torture Elchin Behbudov, six people died of tortures in the country, Azerbaijani APA news agency reports.
He stated that 110 citizens addressed their appeals to the Committee within 10 months in 2009, refusing to name them for safety reasons. “Unfortunately six people died of tortures in Azerbaijan. Three of them died during the tortures, others committed suicide after sufferings.”
The chairman informed that the majority of tortures were registered with law enforcements bodies during the prejudicial inquiry. According to him, there are 15 women and teens among the tortured. In 2008, the committee received 81 appeals; three applicants are dead by now, stated Behbudov.
The official informed that in most cases bludgeons, current, nails pull out were used towards the apprehended. As a proof, Behbudov showed a video where people are put to tortures. He added, that no one appeared before the court for torturing yet. “Based on complains we have forwarded requests to corresponding instances and got replies that the given facts were not confirmed”.
