The sign “Arbeit macht frei” (Work sets you free) was stolen from Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial museum gate of the former Nazi death camp. According to Polish Gazeta Wyborcza daily, the contumelious theft occurred last night.

Local police officers visit the accident scene and examine the witnesses.
It emerged, that the thieves intruded the museum territory, climbed up for several meters and removed the sign, ITAR-TASS reports.

The steal was a one of the major exhibits in the museum and its ultimate symbol. It was made by the Polish political prisoners of the Nazi concentration camp back in 1940.
