YEREVAN. – Armenian National Assembly (NA) Deputy Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov on Wednesday received the Greek Ambassador to Armenia, Ioannis Taghis.
Sharmazanov and the ambassador discussed the present-day course of Armenia’s presidential election, which will be conducted on February 18, NA press service informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.
Specifically, Sharmazanov stressed that it is very important for the Armenian authorities that the vote is held democratically and it meets international standards. As per the NA vice chairman, the current election campaign is competitive and, for the most part, it is carried out on the basis of platforms and ideas. He assured that Armenia has a great opportunity to make democratic elections become a permanent thing.
In Ambassador Taghis’ view, this election resembles a station where Armenia’s values of democracy will become clear. In the Greek diplomat’s conviction, the steps, which the Armenian authorities are taking to organize a democratic voting, are correct and better than the previous steps. As for the complaints, as per Taghis, they are not serious and cannot have any bearing on the course and the results of the forthcoming election. The Greek ambassador expressed a hope that, with this vote, Armenia will prove yet again that the reforms it has assumed are on the right path.
Eduard Sharmazanov and Ioannis Taghis also discussed the avenues for developing interparliamentary ties between both countries. The Greek ambassador handed to Sharmazanov the letter by the Greece-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group members, whereby the latter inform that they delightfully accept NA Deputy Speaker—and Armenia-Greece Parliamentary Friendship Group leader—Eduard Sharmazanov’s invitation to visit Armenia.
