YEREVAN. – Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday received head of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) Dean Spielmann.

President Sargsyan welcomed Spielmann’s visit to Yerevan which coincides with Armenia’s chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and in particular the international conference titled “The European Legal Standards of Rule of Law and the Scope of Discretion of Powers in the Member-States of the Council of Europe” held here.

Sargsyan noted that Armenia is an active member of the Council of Europe and is participating in the activities in all levels, making its contribution to the processes held within the organization. He hailed ECtHR’s role in protecting the rights of around 800 million citizens of the Council of Europe member states. Armenia will continue supporting all the reforms and activities aiming to improve court efficiency, he assured.

In his turn, ECtHR President highly appreciated his discussions held during the meetings with the Armenian officials.

They discussed the course of reforms in Armenia’s legal sphere, cooperation with the European agencies and other issues.
