YEREVAN. – A funny incident took place Thursday evening when Štefan Füle, European Union Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, who had arrived in Armenia’s capital city Yerevan, was preparing to enter Armenia Marriott Hotel, Haykakan Zhamanak daily reports.
“After taking his luggage out of the car, he headed toward the hotel entrance during which he passed by a 06[-model vehicle] that was parked in front of the hotel. One of the Europeans who were meeting him joked [by saying]: ‘I hope that car is not serving you.’
“This joke would have been an ordinary humor in other conditions, but this acquires a special charm in the current situation.
“In this case, the 06 is the symbol of the Customs Union; it is Russian, and now [it is] a display of the economic, technical and technological progress of the future Eurasian Union.
“And Füle’s current visit to Yerevan is on a very sad occasion for him. It turned out that Armenia, which allegedly was going toward Europe for years, has deceived the Europeans. The Europeans were surprised and are sad. And this collective sadness was embossed on Füle’s face,” Haykakan Zhamanak writes.
To note, following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union.
