The Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office had sent letters to all 131 members of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia.

By way of these letters, the office tried to find out the MPs’ positions on the decision for Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union.  

From September 15 to 20, the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office received feedback from six MPs: NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan, Non-pro-government Prosperous Armenia Party NA Faction Secretary Naira Zohrabyan, ruling Republican Party of Armenia NA Faction member Artashes Geghamyan, opposition MP and Free Democrats Party Chairman Khachatur Kokobelyan, MP Karen Karapetyan, and opposition MP and former FM Alexander Arzumanyan.

In their replies, four MPs stated that they are against, whereas Abrahamyan and Karapetyan informed that they favor, Armenia joining the Customs Union.    

To note, following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union.
