SOCHI. - The United Nations should play more active role in Syrian conflict resolution, said Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan at the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) heads of state summit in Sochi, Armenian News-NEWS.am reports.

“In the light of new global issues and challenges, the intensification of UN role in international conflict resolution becomes an urgent issue. This becomes apparent in the recent processes in Middle East region, particularly, in Syria,” President Sargsyan said. “From the very first days of the conflict in Syria we were in favor of its prompt peaceful solution based on nation-wide dialogue.”

According to Armenian president, the international community and Syria’s neighbor states in particular should first of all secure the dialogue based on the interests of all parties involved in the conflict. In this context, Armenia unambiguously welcomes the US-Russian efforts aimed at the peaceful solution of the conflict in Syria.

Serzh Sargsyan also presented Armenia’s vision on the CSTO future development as the safeguard of its members’ sovereignty and independence. In particular, he stressed the importance of unified approach by CSTO members to the issues sensitive for Organization, for example, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution.

“Many states evidently have interests associated with Azerbaijan. However, by no means we will concede to the statements that approve documents directed against CSTO members and against the image of Organization in general,” added Armenian president.
