Leader of the oppositional Republican People's Party (CHP) Deniz Baykal arrived in Van to participate in CHP regional offices conference. He enjoyed a “red-carpet” treatment in the city.
Baykal was met by his party fellows and Van Deputy Governor Omer Ozcan at the airport, Turkish Firat agency reports. While he was heading to the conference premises, a group of demonstrators rang his bus and showered stones and eggs on him. He remained seated in the bus until the police opened a corridor in the crowd and escorted him to the building. Despite the police measures, the protestors chanted “Baykal-murderer”, “Ergenekon-Baykal” and “Baykal-Fascist.”
As reported previously, CHP leader opposes the settlement of Kurdish issue and normalization of Armenia-Turkey relations without Karabakh conflict resolution.
