YEREVAN. – European Commission will allocate 1 billion euros to Armenia in order to strengthen nuclear and radiation safety. The draft program was approved by the Armenian government on Thursday.

It is expected that within the program that will last 8 years a new Western practice will be introduced and more knowledge and experience will be acquired.

Support will be provided to state agencies to ensure nuclear safety in Armenia. As noted in the decision, the need for cooperation is determined by new nuclear safety devices installed in the country, mainly to control the  operation of the reactor of current, second unit of the Armenian NPP.

Assistance will be sought for the final closure of two units. The second unit is supposed to operate till 2026.
