YEREVAN. – The law on equal rights and equal opportunities for men and women has nothing that contradicts our national values, first Ombudsman Larisa Alaverdyan said.
Larisa Alaverdyan noted that she shared concerns that the possible adoption of similar laws caused processes in Europe leading to gay marriage or adoption of children by representatives of LGBT community.
At the same time, the former Ombudsman noted that when it comes to national and religious values “we must look to our society to understand how much we do adhere to these values in our daily lives.”
Alaverdyan noted that the law “On ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men” contains many positive aspects.
“It would be better instead of protesting against the word ‘gender’, to appeal to the positive aspects of this law. I am glad that there are groups that oppose phenomena unacceptable for themselves. But I have not seen those protesting against injustices in the judicial system or social injustice,” she emphasized.
In her opinion, the struggle against domestic violence, for example, would be more relevant.
