YEREVAN. – Unlike the European Union Association Agreement, all the documents related to the Customs Union are in the public domain.

Armenian political scientist, ex-presidential candidate Andreas Ghukasyan stated the aforesaid at a press conference on Friday. 

In his words, it is becoming apparent that the application of the Russian-led Customs Union tariff system will have a very serious impact on Armenia.

“What we import from the West and Iran are those products whose entry the Customs Union is attempting to restrict,” Ghukasyan said. He added that there will be numerous related complications.   

In turn, however, ruling Republican Party MP Artak Davtyan noted that there are dozens of legislative initiatives in connection with Armenia’s planned accession to the Customs Union.   

Davtyan added that these bills will be submitted in the near future to discussions and approval by the National Assembly. 

Following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union. Aside from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan likewise are members in the Customs Union.
