YEREVAN. – We need to force our governments to be more wise and active, so we may have a decent work and salary and secure a decent standard of living.

Armenian sociologist Aharon Adibekyan stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Thursday, as he reflected on the International Day for Helping the Destitute.

In Adibekyan’s words, Syunik is the most prosperous region of Armenia, since it has working institutions and the highest salaries.

“The highest salary in Armenia is in the information sector and the second is mining, which is developed in Syunik,” the sociologist said.

He added, however, that Tavush Region and the border villages, which do not have a market to sell their goods, are the poorest in Armenia.

“The market so far away that the exports are rendered meaningless because the [respective] travel expense is a lot. According to national statistics, the poverty threshold is the same—32 percent—in the village and the city.

“But there is an advantage in the village: they do not die of hunger there. If they have a cow, there will be yogurt. [If] they have a field, they have wheat. [If] they have a tree, [they have] fruit,” Aharon Adibekyan added.
