The United States are deeply concerned by recent restrictions on civil society activities in Azerbaijan, representative of State Department Jen Psaki said during a briefing on Monday.
“We are increasingly concerned that the Government of Azerbaijan is not living up to itsinternational human rights commitments and obligations. We urge the government to respect the universal rights of its citizens and allow them to freely express their views,” Psaki said.
She stressed that they will be best able to ensure their future stability and prosperity by allowing a more open society.
“We’ve certainly expressed this to officials there. I can check and see if there’s anything in the last couple of days on this front,” Psakis said, asked whether the subject was discussed between the U.S. government and Azerbaijani officials.
