YEREVAN. – The European Union (EU) was proposing measures to shut down the Armenian nuclear power plant (NPP), whereas Russia offered means to extend its operation.
Ruling Republican Party of Armenia National Assembly (RPA NA) Faction member Artak Davtyan stated the aforesaid at Wednesday’s NA deliberations with respect to the ratification of the treaty on Armenia’s forthcoming accession to the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).
In his words, the rumors that the EEU will suppress Armenia’s economic development are groundless. As per the MP, on the contrary, in the 2000s, EU had offered €100 million to Armenia to shut down its NPP.
“On the other hand, Russia offered a $270 million loan to extend the NPP’s operation from 2016 to 2026; Armenia will receive these funds in the near future.
“And this treaty [of EEU accession] is fully consistent with the interests of Armenia and its citizenry,” Davtyan added.
