YEREVAN. – Recognition of the Armenian Genocide should not be put at the service of political calculations, Armenia's Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said during a meeting of Euronest parliamentary assembly's committee on political affairs.

Recognition of the Armenian Genocide is one of the most important conditions to prevent such tragedies in the future. This noble goal can not be sacrificed to political conjuncture.

He recalled that the European Parliament adopted a resolution in 1987, and then confirmed his position in 2000, 2002 and 2005.

On March 3, the European People's Party – the largest faction of the European Parliament – adopted a resolution which called to acknowledge and condemn the Armenian Genocide.

“We also appreciate the importance that the European Parliament in a different occasion called on Turkey to open its border with Armenia,” Nalbandian added.
