Yerevan and Rome have a big potential for cooperation, Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan said during his meeting with the Mayor of Rome Ignazio Marino within the framework of his official visit to Italy.

He expressed hope that in near future legal foundations will be set for the development and enhancement of the ties between the two capitals.

Serzh Sargsyan said that the Armenian and Italian nations have a checkered past of historical ties and cooperation, Armenian News – NEWS.am reports, citing the press service of the President’s office.

Touching upon the events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, President Sargsyan highly appreciated the unanimous recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Rome’s City Council in 2000. The President said that Armenia considers the recognition of the Armenian Genocide at the level of over 60 Italian provincial and city councils as adhesion to universal human values and expression of solidarity toward the Armenian nation.

After the meeting with the Mayor, Serzh Sargsyan visited the Vittoriano Museum Complex, where he attended the exhibition “Armenia – the Ark’s nation.”

Armenia’s President also gave an interview to the Italian newspaper Corriere della seara, responding to the questions on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and events over its 100th anniversary, as well as Armenian-Italian relations and Armenia-EU cooperation.
