YEREVAN. – If one considers Eastern Partnership summit in Riga in terms of results for the other members states, it may turn out that for Armenia the summit was the most successful, Deputy Director of Caucasus Institute Sergey Minasyan said.

This is explained by several factors, starting from lack of unrealistic expectations from the Armenian side, he said.

“On the other hand, I think that geopolitical events happening in the territory of Eastern Partnership over the recent year and a half showed that the most balanced and realistic approach of Armenia since 2013 has led to desirable results,” Minasyan added.

The fact that Armenia plans to create new institutional and legal basis for cooperation with EU is consistent with the approaches that were put forward by the Armenian side from September 2013 when Armenia stated intention to join the Customs Union.

“I think the real talks between Armenia and EU over a framework agreement will start in the end of this year,” Minasyan added.

Political analyst added that in new political situation the approach of Russia, Armenia's strategic ally, will also be positive if it will be possible to match joining Eurasian Union with a new treaty with the EU. 

“This is so-called 'Association Agreement light' which includes almost all of the political, democratic reforms, and serious economic package, except for the free trade area (DCFTA), and certain customs regulations,” the analyst said.
