YEREVAN. – The perception of the geopolitical picture in our region is different today than ten days ago.

The first Human Rights Defender of Armenia, “Against Legal Arbitrariness” NGO Executive Director, and public activist Larisa Alaverdyan noted the above-said at a press conference on Saturday. She stated this reflecting on the US congress members’ proposal to maintain the ceasefire.  

“The situation has changed quite certainly,” said Alaverdyan. “I’m convinced that the US showed in this situation that if Russia enters the ‘field’ that belongs to the West—with the US leadership—, it [i.e. the US] will take active steps where Russia is unable to manifest itself categorically, like in the NK [i.e. the Nagorno-Karabakh] issue.”

In her view, the approach, according to which the US intervenes because it is advantageous for it, is naïve.

“Yes, there are major players,” added the first ombudswoman of Armenia. “We need to hunt or ripen the moments, and reap the benefits that are to the benefit of all the peoples of the region. Our objective meets the interests—peace, prosperity, cooperation—of progressive humanity.”  

Larisa Alaverdyan added, however, that we need to be wary of an increase in the role of the US.  “We need to clearly reap the positive that there is, and find the balance so as not to harm us,” she concluded. “Acting aggressively would be wrong, at the least.”
